The Progress of Space Frame Systems

Space frame systems are 3-dimensional, light and rigid load-bearing systems that are necessary to create column-free openings in large structures. These systems, which consist of geometrically connected linear elements and connection elements, provide convenience to constructing buildings that have large spans.

Since this modular system in space frame structures can be square, rectangular, triangular or hexagonal in accordance with the design of the building, it provides flexibility in the design phase. This system, which takes its inspiration from nature, is the reflection of terms such as pattern, geometry and 3rd dimension that we can observe a lot in nature. It can provide the freedom to meet the needs of ‘organic architecture’, and with its aesthetic structure, it is a system that provides a lot of advantages today. In addition, it is an economical option due to its easy installation and transportation features.

The first example of space frame systems was provided by Dr. Ing. Max Mengeringenhausen developed it in the first half of the 1900s and launched it in 1942. The first space cage system, which has been used since its launch, was produced in large volumes in a very short time.

This first example, designed by Dr.Max Mengeringenhausen, has 26 surfaces, a spherical nodal point, and 18 linear parts connected to this junction center, with a maximum span of up to 40 meters. One of the advantages of this structure that it can be assembled by the workers with an easily understandable instructions. This type of space frame system is also demountable.

After Dr.Max Mengeringenhausen’s first space frame model, many different designs have been developed. A second example is the prefabricated pyramid model produced in France. With the aligning of the pyramids in two layers, it can reach wider openings. Another example is the space frame model designed by Mannesmann AG. It consists of an empty connection point and linear elements that can be inserted into it. It cannot be disassembled and is only a carrier system for the roof.

Apart from these three examples, the use of space frame systems, which have many different types, is becoming more common day by day due to its advantages and conveniences.
